Following the meeting at the Embassy with Mr. Adam Sofronijevic, Director of the Philately Department of the Serbian Postal Service, accompanied by Minister-Counselor Prof. Nenad Prokic and Assistant Tamara Jovanovic, I visited the State Archive in Niš to retrieve documentation regarding the hospital train that the Order of Malta donated to the Kingdom of Serbia in 1885, during the war with the Principality of Bulgaria. This documentation may be useful for the possible issuance of a commemorative stamp by the Serbian Postal Service to mark the 140th anniversary of the donation.
The officials were incredibly helpful, and the documentation they managed to retrieve, even from a private individual, was very interesting. I also had the opportunity to visit the Archive and the beautiful fortress where it is located. A special thanks goes to my friend Gaetano Paolillo, President of the Dante Alighieri Committee in Niš, who, through his contact at the city museum, managed to obtain a Serbian newspaper from that time, which mentions the hospital train.
